Talk to them about sensitive issues
Although it can be uncomfortable, you must talk to your child about issues you would rather avoid. For example, your child may have been wearing the same pair of smelly snickers for way too long. Or, you think your child may have begun having sex. By talking with them, you may discover there is a deeper issue and be relieved to have found out about it before things have gotten out of hand.
Talk to them about your problems
Your child may not be grown, and you are entitled to some privacy. But, your child needs to know about the issues that he/she will face as an adult and how effectively deal with them before they go off into the real world.
Let them know that you know who they are
Don't just give your child what you want them to have or what you wish you had as a child. If pink is their favorite color, allow them to wear it. Decorate their room with items that match their personality and personal tastes. Deal with each of your child according to their individual temperament.
Treat them with respect
Allow your child to express their feelings and voice their opinions. This is as long as they do it in a way that is respectable to you. Help them to deal with their problems in ways that are healthy and effective.
Give them hugs and kisses
Your child need to know you love them in order to become loving, and caring adults. Don't wait for them to do something wonderful or until after the next big blow up. Right now is just as good a time as any.
Give them good advice
Don't give your child advice that is biased. And, don't give them advice on issues you are in a state of denial about. You will only lead them astray and hurt them in the long run. Ask another close level-headed relative or friend to talk to them.
Set good examples
Allow your child to catch you doing healthy and productive things such as exercising, eating a piece of fruit, or leaving a condom on the night stand.
Let them know you believe in them
However, don't lie to them about their ability to get something accomplished. But, if they have what it takes, give them all the encouragement they need. Never allow your child to go out and make a fool out of themselves to teach them a lesson. Do help them to find their real interests and to set realistic and healthy goals.
Let them know that you expect them to contribute to the household
Make it perfect clear to them that they are expected to go to school and get a job once they become of legal age. They should be expected to work out their problems with their siblings in an effective manner. Allow them to offer suggestions about improvements around the home.
